Outdoor Christmas lights: solar, battery or USB?

Guirlande lumineuse solaire sur fil de cuivre pour l'extérieur

Decorating outside for Christmas brings a little magic to everyone who walks past your home. But not all string lights hold up outdoors. Here's how to choose.

Check the protection rating (IP) first

Lights used outdoors must withstand rain. Look for the IP rating on the product page: IP44 protects against splashing water, IP65 against water jets. For long-term outdoor use, choose an IP65 model. A product without a rating is for indoor use only.

Solar lights: no outlet, no electricity bill

A small solar panel charges the battery during the day and the lights turn on automatically at dusk. Ideal where there's no outlet: trees, hedges, pergolas.

Good to know: winter days are short. Place the panel in the sunniest spot possible for longer run time.

Battery lights: the easiest to place

No cord, no panel, they go anywhere: door wreath, lantern, planter. The battery copper wire fairy lights are perfect for these small touches, preferably in a sheltered spot.

USB and plug-in: for big effects

For a window or facade, a curtain light with remote or a 400-LED smart curtain controlled from your phone makes an impression. And to cover a whole wall effortlessly, the snowflake projector throws its patterns up to 15 m.

Our safety tips

  • Use extension cords rated for outdoor use.
  • Keep power adapters and outlets protected from water.
  • Turn off plug-in lights at night or use a timer.
